New Album and Studio Documentary | November 15th 2017

Amelia and Erin

Hi everyone! I am so excited to tell you all that I will be spending 10 days in January 2018 in rural Nova Scotia producing my 5th studio album. Joining me, to translate the recording process into a documentary film, is my super talented friend and Juno award-winner, Amelia Curran. We need your help to make it happen! We have started an Indiegogo Campaign that is filled with all kinds of perks and rewards to help fund this creative endeavor.

Amelia and I have been friends for a long time. In fact, years ago we lived in the same apartment building here in Halifax. We would spend our time bouncing between apartments playing each other our newest songs. She was writing Juno-winning album Hunter, Hunter and I was writing We Can Get Over (not a Juno winner, but it won a couple awards:). Most people would not think of Amelia as a documentary filmmaker but she has leaped in with both feet and has made a name for herself with work like Gone, and Listen, a passionate plea for Mental Health care reform in Canada.

We have admired each other’s work for more than a decade but have yet to collaborate on a project. This will be special. It will be the ultimate insight into process of making an album viewed through the eyes of an artist like Amelia. I am so incredibly honoured that she wants to do this. I trust her completely and I know she will capture and share the process of this record in a way that does it justice.

Unlike past records, I have challenged myself to create this record in 10 days. Normally I love to really drag out the process. Editing and revising, sometimes for years before completing an album. This time, I only get 10 days. But they will be 10 amazing, creative and inspiring days with some of the most wonderful musicians – including Blue Rodeo’s drummer Glenn Milchem, longtime collaborator Clive MacNutt on guitar, Anna Ruddick on upright and electric bass (Randy Bachmann, Ben Caplan, Ladies of the Canyon), Leith Fleming-Smith (Matt Mays) on organ, Andrew McKelvie (sax) and Andrew Jackson (trombone), plus my long-time loves, the Blue Engine String Quartet.

In the middle of winter, the unique space where the album and film will be created will serve as an incubator for all of my talented friends to come together and make music and art. The space is an open concept timber-frame construction with massive fireplaces, ocean views and a central staircase, built around an ancient white pine, felled in a nearby forest. The space seems to nurture and cull creativity, and because of this, all musicians will live at the space and create all day, in and around this inspiring environment and each other.

We will be sharing the journey as it unfolds via social media, email updates to supporters and videos. We want to share the process and to get everyone excited about the new music and film.

Producer of the Year | November 6th 2017

Last night I won the Producer of the Year award at the Nova Scotia Music Awards. Thank you so much to all of the artists who have allowed me to play a part in sharing your music with the world. Elise Bryn, Leanne Hoffman, Adam Sterling, Samm Reid.

Unfortunately I was out of town and wasn’t there to accept it.

Here is my acceptance speech. Thanks to Dana Beeler for reading it and being there to accept the award in my absence. ❤️❤️❤️

“Thank you so much for this award. It means a tremendous amount to be honoured in this way. I could be wrong but I think I may be the first woman to receive it.

Please take this as a call to action. We have a responsibility. As a creative community we are not reflecting the voices of everyone. And we are missing out. Music and art reflects our society and it has the potential to CHANGE our society.

Hire more women. By doing so, we will see ourselves reflected on stages and behind the scenes as producers and engineers, and as a result will be more likely to step into these roles. We need to hear the world reflected through these voices. It is crucial. Especially now.

I take this award as a huge responsibility. I promise to use my privilege to open the doors that I can. Especially to women of colour and trans women to help their voices be heard. Let’s have a woman in this category every year. Multiple women. We do not all have the same voice. Let’s hear from everyone.”
